Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Whats the best way to learn about Zen and try it out?
A: The best way is to take the "The Introduction to Zen Class" which is offered several times thoughout the year. The second best way is drop by the Centre on Wednesday nights and go from there. Zen is in the doing, so while reading Zen books helps, it doesn't give you a real taste, fortunately coming to the Centre and participating for a while does.
Q: I have very little or no experience with meditation or Zen, can I still come to the Centre?
A: Sure, Wednesday nights would be a good time to come and check out the Centre. Some brief meditation instruction is available at this time.
Q: I am not a member of the Zen Centre but I know how to meditate, can I still come to the regular meditation sessions (sittings)
A: Yes, you are welcome to attend all the sittings, however donations are always welcome but not necessary.
Q: I am interested in exploring Zen Koans but don't know how to medititate, can I still participate in the Koan Groups?
A:Yes, no experience necessary.
Q:I like what you guys are doing and want to help, how do I become a member?
A: You can check out the Membership page on this website and drop by the centre and pick up a membership form. You can also email us and we can send out the information by email.
Q: Do I have to call or join before coming to a sitting (meditation session)?
A: No.
Q: What should I bring?
A: Nothing! You do not need to bring your own cushions or seiza benches - all cushions and benches are provided.
Q: What should I wear?
A: Loose and comfortable clothing is suggested. We'll be sitting on the floor.
Q: Is the Centre open to everyone?
A: Yes, everyone is welcome.
Q: Does the Centre make a profit?
A: No, the Centre is a Not for Profit Corporation and everyone working at the Centre works as a volunteer. All funds received are used to cover the physical operating expenses only.
Q: Where do I park?
A: There is parking in the driveway for about four cars and also along the east side of Waterloo Street about halfway up the block - check the signs.
